January 24, 2000, dawned cold and snowy but not nearly as snowy as the blizzard which would dump nearly two feet of snow on Washington, DC just a few hours after the conclusion of the annual March For Life. CBR was there with the full Genocide Awareness Project and it was viewed by tens of thousands of school students who had been bussed in for the March. Our presence ensured that they would see what abortion is and does, many for the first time in their lives. And the horrified looks on their faces offered the best evidence that most would never be the same.
Large numbers of pro-life activists trace the origins of their activism to a sense of outrage they first sensed when they saw a picture of an aborted baby. Because pictures of this sort were not an official part of the March For Life program, it was vitally important these vast crowds of students be taught the truth that only pictures can convey.
Our display site, at 15th Street and Constitution Avenue, was on the Mall because Nellie Gray, the director of the March, would not allow CBR to exhibit on the Elipse, where the March For Life program took place. She said she didn't want CBR's huge pictures to "distract" the attention of the crowd from her program. This sort of selfishness is epidemic among pro-life "leaders" and is a major reason we are losing this struggle. But we nonetheless made sure the students saw the truth and they will remember the pictures long after they have forgotten every word of every speech they heard that day.
