CBR's visit to Chapel Hill brought large crowds of students face to face with abortion, many for the first time. Robert Stewart (red hat, second from left), a CBR volunteer from New Jersey, isn't shy about defending the unborn in front of large and sometimes hostile crowds. One UNC grad student offered the following observation concerning the GAP display: "This project has sparked more debate on the campus than any other project that has ever been on campus.” CBR volunteer Andrene Haughton faces off with the cameras for this interview. Though she was one of eight African-Amerian pro-lifers working our display, the Black Student Movement (BSM) still denounced GAP as "racist". One of their members, however, came up to say, “I’m really ashamed to say that I belong to the BSM...they are acting so stupid.”
Though these protesters were eager for GAP to leave campus, many students saw the value of our display. As one student noted, “when the Vietnam War was going on, our media put the war in our living rooms...why won’t they do the same thing with the war of abortion?” CBR Midwest director Mark Harrington consistently comes back to the photos while making his arguments. The pictures are foundational in establishing a student's understanding that abortion is an act of violence which kills a baby. CBR's Jane Bullington (fourth from right, partially hidden) speaks with a group of gathered students. One pro-choice student offered this remark, “This is a brilliant display – offensive but brilliant!” CBR's Greg Davis is often called upon to share why he as a Jew is compelled to reference the Holocaust as an appropriate means of educating students about abortion.
CBR condemns all abortion related violence and will not associate with groups or individuals who fail to condemn such violence.
